Online reputation

Memo

To: Jakob Asplund

From: Gabe Hampton

Date: 4/24/2010

Re: Online reputation

Jake,

I recently concluded an online search to discover more about your background in an effort to try to learn more about you. I was curious to know just how much I could find online. This may or may not be alarming to you but my search revealed more than I though possible. Below you will find the results from my research:

Jake, according to my research you were born in Stockholm Sweden on May 9, 1987. Your parents are Jan and Anne. You have one brother named Daniel. You attended Rudbeck Gymnasium High School in Stockholm, Sweden. You are 5 feet, eight inches tall. Your full name is actually Jakob Per Asplund. . Your blog is located at jakeascplund.blogspot.com

When you were seven years old you crushed your finger in an accident. Your mom wanted you to regain strength in that hand so she signed you up for tennis. You have been involved ever since.

You were one of the top junior tennis players in Sweden and earned a scholarship to play tennis at USU. You have been the number one singles player on the USU tennis team from your Freshman year to present. Your doubles partner is Bryan Marchant. You are also the number one doubles tandem on the USU team. You were named academic all WAC your Freshman and Junior years. You’re combined singles record from 2008 – 2009 was 24 -27, your doubles record from the same time period was 23 – 26.

You are currently a Public Relations and Marketing major. You really like Quentin Terrantino movies and you learned to speak English mostly from watching those movies. You have learned the hard way that the Utah/Logan culture is much different than the Terrantino culture. You enjoy living in America but the Mormon culture and USU are quite a culture shock as people in Sweden are more reserved and Stockholm is a huge city.

There you go Jake. There’s quite a bit about you out there. It makes me nervous to think of what someone might find out about me.

Warmest regards,

Gabe Hampton

JCOM 2160 reading response 2

-All about resumes-. I found all of these articles very informative. There are so many different ways to create a resume and one can get so much advise. It's hard to know who is right. 1. I really liked how simple Shannon Paul's post was. I had never thought about using the body of an Email to introduce yourself and your intentions in that much depth. That's a really good idea. 2. The wikihow post was also very informative. Those 6 simple points are self explanatory, very succinct and clear. I especially like the part that says to not focus on resonsibilities but on achievements. People want the bottom line. 3. Thanks for the links Shane! Those will come in very handy.

JCOM 2160 reading 1 response

1. As I read through the core rules of netiquette I didn't feel like I learned more than I already know. I guess the same things that fall inder proper netiquette are the same things that fall under proper etiquette. The whole basis is putting others first and basically being a decent human being. 2. I thought the dog comics were pretty funny though. That's why I'll never understand online only romances. You have no clue who you are talking to. 3. The conversational terrorism link was very clever and creative. That must have taken a long time to come up with. It's a work of art. I especially liked The Delay Tactics. 4. The Email etiquette was much like the netiquette. It seemed really obvious to me. Maybe that's just me though.--Overall, good reads. The education aspect was lacking but the hunor and wit made up for it.

Toyota Motor Co.
Akio Toyoda, President
4-18, Koraku 1-chome
Bunkyo, Tokyo Prefecture
Japan

Toyota President, Akio Toyoda says he is "personally leading the effort to restore trust in Toyota's word and in our products."

Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Co. said the company will have to return to its roots of "building the highest quality, safest and most reliable automobiles in the world" in order to repair the company's public image.

Recently Toyota Motor Co. has ordered production of eight models in five plants across North America temporarily stopped so that they could focus on fixing customers' vehicles that might be affected by sticking accelerator pedals.

Toyoda apologized and said he was "Deeply disappointed." Toyota also said that the past few weeks is evidence that Toyota has not lived up to its high standard set over 70-plus years.

"While problems with our cars have been rare over the years, the issues that Toyota is addressing today are by far the most serious we have ever faced," Toyota said.

Toyoda is most concerned about the customer, " The company has always put the needs of our customers first and made the constant improvement of our vehicles a top priority," Toyoda said, "That is why 80 percent of all Toyotas sold in the United States over the past 20 years are still on the road today."

Toyoda called the 172,000 American Toyota employees "among the best" in the industry and said they are "working around the clock" to repair damaged vehicles. Toyota is also working hand-in-hand with the US Transportation Secretary and Toyoda has ordered a "top to bottom review of all company operations."

Toyoda pledged his personal commitment to ensuring customer satisfaction and "The Toyota Way."

"Great companies learn from their mistakes, and we know that we have to win back the trust of our customers by adhering to the very values on which that trust was first built, Toyoda said, "You have my commitment that Toyota will revitalize the simple but powerful principle that has guided us for 50 years: Toyota will build the highest-quality, safest and most reliable automobiles in the world."

"United Breaks Guitars"

Dave Carroll said he was on a United airline flight with his band, "Sons of Maxwell", when the band's bassist noticed the luggage crew violently throwing their instruments around while loading them. Carroll said the guitar, which was worth an estimated $3500, incurred $1200 worth of damages. After months of phone calls and e-mails to United, he was given several excuses of why they were unable to process any claim on his behalf and United refused to reimburse him.

The story told by Dave Carroll on his website, http://www.davecarrollmusic.com/story/united-breaks-guitars, provoked Carroll to write three songs to express his displeasure. The songs have become Internet hits with the first song alone garnering over four million views on You Tube. While Carroll was upset at the time, this has become a launching point for "Sons of Maxwell". The type of exposure his band has gained through their comical song "United Breaks Guitars" is far more than the local venues they were playing at before.

United Airlines, on the other hand made a huge Public Relations gaffe. An airline which is struggling economically anyway really added insult to injury when Carroll's unpleasant experience further tarnished an already struggling public image. This is why successful companies are consistently successful. In order to succeed as a company customer service has to be emphasized on all levels. This cannot just be a goal, it has to be the culture. This is why public relations professionals are vital to the success of any company. The corporate big-wigs need to measure their publics' temperature and need to communicate their vision effectively. There is no doubt that United Airlines preached customer service. Any savvy CEO would know this is paramount. Their PR department was obviously the weak link.

Had United had better customer service to begin with, Carroll might just be singing their praises. Instead, they are faced with a PR nightmare.

Robert Dotson CEO/President

Mr. Dotson,

The purpose of this letter is to extend my gratitude to your company for the excellent customer service provided. I have been a T-Mobile customer for 3 years now and I can say without equivocation that the customer service rendered by T-Mobile is the industry standard.

If I ever have an issue, as issues do creep up, it is always resolved in a professional and cheerful manner. The associates sound happy to speak to me and are sincerely concerned and engaged. Before I was a valued T-Mobile customer I received cell phone service through AT&T and Verizon. Those companies do not hold a candle to T-Mobile. Even though the area I live in gets better reception through the aforementioned companies, I continue to be a T-Mobile customer based solely on the premise of the superior customer service.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Gabe Hampton

Letter to my cousin.

Dear Casey,

Thanks for your letter. I’m glad to hear that it wasn’t serious. It sounds like you just need to apply the cream your doctor prescribed and the swelling will go away. Good luck with that.
Casey, in your last letter you asked me about the role of public relations professionals and what they write about it. That’s a pretty broad question that could go several directions but let me just explain the basics.
There are two types of public relations professionals or PR professionals, internal and external. Internal PR is focused more in-house. For instance, a company or other organization might have a newsletter, website or something else they use to communicate solely with its employees. The PR professional in this instance is mainly responsible for this type of communication.
External PR professionals are responsible for a company or other organization’s public image. They are the voice for the organization of which they are employed. The external PR professional could be involved in marketing, speech writing, advertising, press releases, news conferences and anything else that would communicate that company’s message/values to the public.
I hope that helps you understand the PR profession a little more. Overall, The PR professional is vital to any company’s success. Every company has a vision. PR professionals give that vision a voice.
Thanks again for your letter and we’ll talk soon.
